Abstract

The translation of social research into policy and community practice is increasingly recognized as a critical process for addressing complex societal challenges and improving evidence-informed decision-making. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary literature on the conceptual foundations, mechanisms, determinants, challenges, and future directions of research translation. The review highlights the roles of evidence-informed policymaking, stakeholder engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, implementation science, digital innovation, and participatory approaches in facilitating the uptake of research into real-world settings. It further identifies key determinants of successful translation, including methodological rigor, institutional capacity, equitable governance, effective communication, and community participation, while examining persistent barriers such as resource limitations, misinformation, and contextual variability. Emerging opportunities associated with artificial intelligence, co-production of knowledge, and participatory research are also discussed as strategies for strengthening the societal impact of research. Overall, effective knowledge translation requires sustained collaboration among researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and communities to ensure that evidence is relevant, accessible, and actionable. Strengthening these processes will enhance the capacity of social research to inform policy, improve community practice, and promote equitable and sustainable social development.
